FAQ

Why should I sell my books with you?

Take the hassle out of rehoming your books and make way for new favourites, by selling your books to us - without having to leave the house!

Particpating in our Shelf SWOP programme allows us to continue to offer books at a low cost, making books widely available and accessible no matter where in NZ you live.

Our goal is to build a circular economy of books (continuing on the long tradition of book exchanges which are harder and harder to find) where books come and go several times before reaching their final home on a shelf, or maximum life span.

You can choose to donate your profit to our monthly charity to support our monthly fundraisers for deserving local charities.

What books are you currently accepting?

We accept high quality recent release, and best selling fiction and non-fiction, and classics for all ages, like you would find on our website.

Books must be in good condition, meaning the condition you would proudly gift to a friend.

It is not feasible for us to buy, store and sell all books, so we are selective in what we purchase in order to keep our website enjoyable to browse. Please read through our do/don't list carefully, and if you have any questions, contact us.

What books don't you accept?

We don't accept:

  • Damaged books including water damage, significant rips or tears, or anything that impacts readability
  • Travel guides
  • Magazines
  • Recipe books (unless recent)
  • Craft or gardening books
  • Dieting or spirituality books
  • Obscure non-fiction eg. military history
  • Encyclopaedias, dictionaries (and similar) or annuals

Currently we are not accepting books by: Clive Cussler, Wilbur Smith,

Please note that any unaccepted books will not be returned.

Do you buy all books? What happens to books you don't accept?

It is not feasible for us to buy, store and sell all books, so we are selective in what we purchase in order to keep our website enjoyable to browse. Please read through our do/don't list carefully, and if you have any questions, please contact us.

We will inform you of any books we are unable to purchase because they did not meet our guidelines, however we are unable to return books due to the added admin and shipping costs.

Unaccepted books are either:

  • Donated
  • Redistributed to community groups
  • Shared in little libraries for free
  • Recycled if at end of life

How many books can I send to you?

Our buy back is perfect for that handful of books you've read and want to rehome. The minimum is 3 books, and our SWOP bags can fit up to 8-9 books.

If you have a larger number of books you wish to sell, please contact us so we can arrange this.

How does shipping work?

The Shelf SWOP programme and bags are free to use, however you pay the initial shipping fee to receive it. You can combine this with any other books or accessories for best value, and we'll even pack your order in a SWOP bag (if appropriate) to save on single use packaging!

We will provide a prepaid shipping label to return the books to us at no cost.

How do I send my books back to you?

Check over your books to make sure they meet our buy back guidelines, and are in neat, tidy condition.

Arrange your books in the SWOP bag to evenly distribute weight, then seal the bag (using tape if you like) and add the prepaid shipping label to the front.

Once your books are ready, arrange your courier pick up using the link provided, and you're all set!

How will I know you have received my books?

We will send you an email within 48 hours of receiving your books to confirm they have arrived.

If you have not heard from us within 7 days, please email us.

What timeframe can I expect?

We currently have a 14 business day turnaround, but this may be extended at times due to ill health or a high number of Shelf SWOP arrivals.

You can email us at anytime for an update on your Shelf SWOP progress.

How do you price the books?

Our pricing system factors in condition, age, popularity and scarcity of each book. Our prices are chosen to ensure we can continue to offer our books at an affordable and accessible price on our website.

Books that meet our criteria are priced from $1-5 unless they are special editions, in which case we will take this into consideration.

We are unable to provide exact prices for each book, but rather a total for all books in your SWOP bag.

How does store credit vs cash/donation work?

Please note we are currently only offering store credit.

You select your pay out method when purchasing your Shelf SWOP bag. We offer 10% more for store credit or donation vs cash.

You will be emailed at the time of pay-out the total earned or donated (note, donations will be made at the end of the month).

Can I still donate books to you?

Absolutely! Donations have been the back bone of this business and are the reason we have been able to grow enough to offer this buy back scheme. Donations allow us to keep our books as affordable as possible, so we welcome donations of all sizes. If you would like to donate books to us, please email us.
